The TARDIS has materialised on the Western Front during the First World War. Or is it Ancient Rome? Or is it the American Civil War? The Second Doctor, Jamie and Zoe are forced to face an evil of such magnitude that help is required…

The Target novelisations often had a TARDIS-like quality, with long TV stories condensed into 120 pages through seamless editing. The War Games, at 10 episodes, was no exception. Malcolm Hulke’s adaptation slices much of the filler that bloated the story, leaving a fascinating, fast paced tale that has a ‘race-against-time’ quality befitting such a momentous adventure.

Patrick Troughton’s son, David Troughton, performs a narration that’s startlingly reminiscent of his father’s distinctive vocal delivery. When Troughton junior is called on to play the Doctor, it’s guaranteed to send a shiver up your spine, especially during the final chapters as the show changes forever.

In short, this audio affords the opportunity for listeners to enjoy one of the series’ most monumental stories by one of its finest writers and read by the nearest thing to one of the classic, early Doctors. Not to be missed. Jonathan Wilkins

VERDICT: 8/10
You definitely need to play The Game…
