Tension mounts as the TARDIS traps the Doctor and his companions on board. But is a more sinister intelligence at work?
David Whitaker’s The Edge of Destruction was originally designed as a cost-cutting two-parter set entirely in the TARDIS and featuring no guest stars, meaning there’s plenty of scope for opening it up in the audio novel format.
The opportunity isn’t wasted. This audio adventure skilfully expands on the characters’ thoughts and motivations and the stifling sense of paranoia that envelops them as they begin to suspect each other of wrongdoing.
Nigel Robinson’s expansion of Whitaker’s often-overlooked tale works beautifully. He successfully gets inside the heads of the terrified travellers leading to a growing sense of menace and dread. William Russell is, as always, a reassuring narrator, and the accompanying music and sound effects are suitably dramatic, if occasionally a little overblown. Jonathan Wilkins
VERDICT: 8/10
A unique and distinctive little story that works well in this expanded version.
