The Winchester brothers go up against good, evil, angels, devils, destiny and God himself…
The climactic season in the saga of the Winchesters – or at least, that’s how it was originally envisaged – has a few weak episodes, but starts dramatically and finishes with the ultimate showdown, with Sam possessed by Lucifer, fighting the Archangel Michael just as Dean arrives in the Impala…
If you’ve not been following the series, then much of this season will go over your head, but there are plenty of rewards for faithful fans, including, at the start of the finale, the conversation between Sam and Dean that the series has been building towards. As with Buffy’s fifth year, if the show had come to the end of its run here, it would be remembered as a strong contribution to genre television.
Fans aren’t as well served by the extras on the DVD set – an interesting commentary on the future-set ‘The End’, and a gag reel are all you get. A wasted opportunity, as it would have been good to hear show creator Eric Kripke’s thoughts on the finale. Paul Simpson
VERDICT: 7/10
Let’s hope season six doesn’t diminish the weight of these episodes.
