Zombies invade a Star Trek convention…

Clearly written by two fans of the long running sci-fi franchise (whose dislike of Star Trek: Enterprise is obvious from the complete dearth of references to the final TV incarnation), Night of the Living Trekkies isn’t going to win any awards for its original take on the zombie mythos. However it is an entertaining read, even for those who aren’t well versed in Gene Roddenberry’s creation, although some of the best gags will inevitably pass them by.

Sensibly the authors have chosen to make their central character someone who knows and appreciates Trek but isn’t a dyed-in-the-wool Trekkie. To add to his difficulties, they team him up with a girl who spends most of the story in a Slave Leia costume (and who can't resist quoting apposite lines from the Star Wars saga).

An interesting conversation about the difference between Trekkies and Trekkers hidden near the middle of the book becomes relevant to the final outcome of the story – those who seek to emulate the philosophies of Star Trek (rather than just playing dress-up) are the ones who are likely to survive the zombie apocalypse. Peter Quentin

VERDICT: 7/10
With some appropriately gross imagery, and the inevitable gag about the Star Trek episode Spock’s Brain, this is a fun read for zombie fans.
