DVD review (region 2)
Directed by Eric Forsberg
Starring Tiffany!, Paul Logan, Barry Williams
Release date 9 August 2010
A Special Agent and a 1980s’ pop star (pretending to be a Professor) battle outsize piranha from the Amazon that threaten to eat Florida….
It’s either a top selling point or a warning when a Grade-Z film from notorious mockbuster studio The Asylum is promoted with the phrases: “From the studio that brought you Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus” and “Starring 1980s’ pop sensation Tiffany!” Buyer beware, indeed.
There can’t be anyone interested in film who doesn’t know what they are going to get from a low budget flick from The Asylum — the studio is notorious for producing quickie knock-offs of recent or forthcoming big budget movies, in this case the new Piranha 3D. It’s also one in a long line of cheapie giant sea monster movies that escape on DVD, then seem to populate the schedules of the Syfy channel.
Given all that, Mega Piranha is not as bad as you might fear: there seems to have been slightly more money spent than usual on this one, and the ‘special’ effects are not quite as ropey as they could have been. That doesn’t mean it’s any good — it’s not, it’s rubbish.
Extras include a standard ‘making of’ feature and a blooper reel that’s not as funny as bits of the main feature. Mark James
VERDICT: 4/10
Fans of schlock can probably add two points to this score, but anyone else really needs to be drunk to appreciate this flick.
