High-concept shenanigans from the 1980s as an injured cop fights crime at full throttle…

It seems weird now, but during the mid-1980s there was a trend for shows built around futuristic vehicles. The most popular of these was Knight Rider of course, but the likes of Blue Thunder, Airwolf and The Highwayman all catered to fans of vehicle-based adventure. Street Hawk was another entry in this short-lived genre, a motorbike action series that feels like a scaled-down Knight Rider.

Like the best 80s adventure shows, leading man Rex Smith plays the ridiculous premise entirely straight, which somehow makes it much more entertaining. Joe Regalbuto, as the crazy scientist who's the brains behind the outfit, is an effective comic foil. The rest of the cast are as bland as you'd expect in TV of the period. George Clooney pops up as a guest star in an early episode – it’s weird to note that he displays none of the star quality that would propel him to the top.

It’s fun to revisit the show, but if you didn’t catch it first time around you may well hate it.

A decent documentary features the keys players and their fond recollections of the show (George Clooney is, strangely enough, absent). An alternative version of the pilot is included for completists. Jonathan Wilkins

VERDICT: 6/10
A daft slice of 80s nostalgia.
