George, Nina and Annie are hoping for help from Jaggat and Kemp – but Mitchell wants revenge...

Going out on a high note, this concluding episode of the second season wraps up a lot of plotlines, and sets up some intriguing ideas for the third year, as the central trio reassert their humanity in the face of the human monsters they've been facing.

Annie's fate is the most shocking – dragged through a door not meant for her into a bureaucratic afterlife (limbo interpreted in a literal and metaphorical way), she's now even more lost than before, although at least she's found a way to communicate with her friends. It's sometimes felt as if Annie's arc for the season was plotted across six rather than eight episodes, but she's very definitely not on the sidelines this episode.

The bond between George and Mitchell, seemingly overlooked while each has pursued their own agendas this season, also becomes central to the resolution, and with the return of an old enemy in the tag scene, it looks as if it'll be tested next year.

The dramatic tension is heightened considerably by the use of music – not in the "score every emotional beat" way that has sometimes characterised Doctor Who, but in its sparseness, in a different way highlighting the "reality" of the situation.

With the show potentially now featuring a vampire, two werewolves, and two ghosts living together – we were deliberately not shown Lucy's fate – roll on next season! Paul Simpson

VERDICT: 8/10
