Computer game review
Playstation 3 (Also: Xbox 360; PC DVD)
Release date 21 August 2009
The year: 1943. The SS plans to master an occult force known as the Black Sun. With this mysterious power source at its disposal, no army on Earth could stand in the Reich's path. You take on the role of special agent B.J. Blazkowicz in the fight to keep the bad guys at bay…
The first person shooter is perhaps one of the most oversubscribed genres in videogames at the moment. With the likes of Doom, Quake, FEAR 2 and the unstoppable Call of Duty series cornering the market, the long established Wolfenstein franchise needed to pull something special out of the bag to stay in the game.
Handily the franchise has been neatly reinvigorated thanks to an updated game engine that's been modified to include some very neat depth of field effects that contribute to an extremely immersive experience. Havok physics have been employed and, in the in-game universe, the game now features a weird supernatural realm called The Veil. While in The Veil you attain certain abilites that assist you in your mission such as the power to slow time, pass obstacles that exist in the real world and obilterate otherwise unstoppable villains.
While it’s not neccesarily a groundbreaking game, Wolfenstein is an excellent entry in the series that’s strong on atmosphere and that crucial ‘just one more go’ factor. After all, blasting demonic Nazis never really goes out of style! Jonathan Wilkins
VERDICT: 8/10
The horrors of war – quite literally – have never been so fun.
