DVD review (region 1)
Starring Bret Harrison, Ray Wise, Tyler Labine
Release date Out now
Sam Oliver (Harrison) is an employee at the Work Bench hardware store and reluctant soul collector for the Devil (Wise) himself…
The similarities between Reaper and Chuck are easy to spot, with both featuring a hardware store embroiled in a secret war and a gang of reluctant though plucky heroes. But here the cookie cutter format of the show is far and away overshadowed by the hilarious script, played to perfection by a thoroughly watchable cast.
Ray Wise revisits his Laura Palmer-murdering days as the Devil and though he might be the real star of the show, it’s Tyler Labine as Sock who brings the fratboy humour of a Will Ferrell movie to the small screen.
Sam and Andi’s story arc is rather sidelined this series, making them the least interesting element of the story, but Sock’s drooling over his new stepsister and Ben’s new demon girlfriend Nina provide some brilliant character moments. Ben and Nina’s relationship in particular is one of the most genuine things I’ve seen in a series of this genre, despite the supernatural boundaries they have to overcome. But there’s a real warmth between everyone.
I could go on forever about the laughs in this series but it would be a shame to spoil them - suffice to say there are plenty. Take particular note of Ben saying goodbye to his girlfriend by discussing the relative merits of bath sharing to shower sharing... Great stuff.
The extras are fairly standard but there’s more than enough entertainment in the episodes themselves to keep you coming back. Oli Smith
VERDICT: 8/10
It might be cold, but I hope Sam never wins his soul back.
