A revolutionary group claim credit for bombs that kill friends of the Gene Genie...

There's no getting away from the fact that New York City in 1973 is a more fertile ground for storylines than Manchester was. This episode is one of the best of the American version of the series, mainly because it doesn't try to relocate a UK story into Manhattan, but uses the contemporary opportunities provided.

At its heart though is a story that could be set anywhere in the world, as Gene, Sam and Annie get to the bottom of a vendetta that's being carried out for completely different reasons to the ones they imagine. This gives some great moments for Gene and Sam – Keitel's version of Gene Hunt can be softer than the original, but he's the more believable because of it. The writers even play on the fact that someone of Keitel's age should really be retired by now.

Although it's pushed to the background in this episode, Sam's journey of discovery continues, as he begins to realise that he ought to enjoy what he can while he's in 1973. With only four episodes left of the show, that applies to the audience too. Paul Simpson

VERDICT: 8/10
