Death row Sam Seed inmate survives his own execution…

According to a common urban myth, US Federal law decrees that if an inmate survives three separate jolts in the electric chair he can go free (much to the chagrin of the state police and officials) - an idea that forms the backbone of this nasty little shocker from the increasingly infamous Uwe Boll.

The death row of this movie houses one of the most vicious and prolific serial killers in US history – Sam Seed (William Sanderson). The prison’s electric chair is on its last legs. Cue a botched live burial and a diabolical rampage of revenge from Seed, an evil-doer who is nothing if not determined.

Although full of moments where you can spot obvious potential, Seed is not a good film by any means. It’s often confused, with strained dialogue and an incredibly intrusive score. However, like a lot of Uwe Boll’s work, it does have a certain charm – there are some very effective and imaginative stop motion sequences that work well and a few genuinely disturbing ideas.

There is also a palpable air of menace at times, which raises the film above many others of its type. Caroline Dunne

VERDICT: 5/10
A film with some interesting ideas that never realises its potential.
