TV episode review
US airdate 25 January 2008 (Sci Fi Channel)
To test whether he is the prophesied one, Flash is sent to Frigia to rescue the ice queen…
Far, far too late, this show produces a cracking episode, penned by Gillian Horvath and directed by Stargate alumnus Martin Wood, who even manages to get a respectable performance out of one of the worst guest stars to appear on the series. The pace is right. The effects are used sparingly so that there’s enough money in the pot to do the one monster well. Rankol moves in a weird way we’ve not seen before that seems to defy gravity. Even Zarkov isn’t too annoying!
You have to suspect that the producers knew that there wasn’t much chance of the show coming back by this stage, as they’re bringing the big anti-Ming rebellion front and centre. Rankol starts to show his true allegiances, while John Ralston as Ming gets an opportunity to go over the top in a horribly controlled way as he challenges Aura over what she’s been doing.
The cantons are beginning to unite behind Flash, while on Earth, Dale is hovering over whether to reveal Mongo’s existence. Everyone has something to do, and does it well. If only the whole series had been like this! Paul Simpson
VERDICT: 8/10
