A mysterious, but seemingly invincible, farmer – called, uhm, “Farmer” – is lured into battle against an evil sorcerer who is attempting to wreak havoc upon a peaceful kingdom of peasants and scantily clad kung-fu females who live in trees. Yes, you read that right…
Director Uwe Boll is in no way, shape or form the worst filmmaker alive but neither, it has to be said, has he made anything that rises above late night fodder on the Sci Fi Channel. Unfortunately, In the Name of the King is his worst offering to date. While the likes of Bloodrayne at least possessed an element of fun, this dire fantasy epic is too long, totally without cause or explanation and is also possibly the worst edited picture of the year.
Different sub plots are thrown back and forth without any pacing or forewarning and no motivation is given for anything that takes place onscreen. When hero Jason Statham finally saves his wife, and the mother of his children, at the end of the movie with the line “There’s something I have been meaning to tell you… I love you,” then you know that you’re in bad movie hell. And then some.
Extras include deleted scenes and some on-set footage. Calum Waddell
VERDICT: 3/10
