The third in the ongoing series of Cassie Palmer novel sees our psychic – sorry clairvoyant – heroine hunting for the ancient Merlini Codex. Unfortunately she also has to deal with the King of the Fey, a sect of Fire Mages and earlier versions of Mircea and renegade mage John Pritkin!
Embrace the Night isn’t exactly a typical entry in the growing sea of supernatural chick lit. It ticks all the boxes: strong female lead, sexy vampire, mystical beings and magical goings on, conflict, romance and triumph over adversity. Thing is, it’s not flaky either. Cassie narrates with a strong voice and the plot is fast flowing and entertaining. Yes, some might grimace at the concept of a book written by Merlin, but even the time travel aspect doesn’t feel too predictable.
However, as is often the case with ongoing series the book does feel a little like a snapshot in Cassie’s life; a new instalment just to keep avid fans from breaking down Karen Chance’s door. But it’s still very enjoyable and one of the better examples of this new genre. Lesley Smith
VERDICT: 6/10
A rare gem in a sea of supernatural chick lit, Embrace the Night is sophisticated, slick and not too corny, making it a very entertaining read.
