Actor Michael Gough has died aged 94.
Gough was known to Doctor Who fans for playing the Celestial Toymaker in the 1966 serial of the same name, as well as playing Councillor Hedin in 1983’s Arc of Infinity.
His other most famous role was probably Bruce Wayne’s loyal butler Alfred in Tim Burton’s Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992) and Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & Robin (1997).
Gough’s first screen role was in the 1946 film Androcles and the Lion, followed by Julien Duvivier’s adaptation of Anna Karenina in 1948. He went on to appear in almost 200 TV shows and films, including The Man in the White Suit (1951), Dracula (1958), Konga (1961), Black Zoo (1963) and Sleepy Hollow (1999).
From 1962 to 1979 the actor was married to Anneke Wills, who played the Doctor’s assistant Polly. She went on to reveal the highs and lows of their marriage in her autobiographies Self Portrait and Naked.
His last role was as the voice of Uilleam the Dodo in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland (2010).
