Screenwriter Tom Mankiewicz, best known for his work on the James Bond films, has died at the age of 68.

Mankiewicz got his first writing Hollywood writing gig in 1971, when he was hired to rewrite the script to Diamonds are Forever. He went on to pen the screenplays for Live and Let Die and The Man with the Golden Gun, and edited the script to Bond’s 10th big screen adventure, The Spy Who Loved Me.

In 1978, Mankiewicz worked with Richard Donner on Superman and again in 2006 as Creative Consultant on the director’s cut of Superman II. After seeing his work on Superman, Warner Brothers hired the screenwriter for an exclusive deal as a script fixer, where he contributed to the screenplays on other successful blockbusters such as Gremlins and Tim Burton’s Batman.

After a fight with cancer, Tom Mankiewicz passed away in Los Angeles, California, on July 30, 2010.
