J.J. Abrams will produce Boilerplate, an adaptation of the graphic novel from creators Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett, reports Deadline.
Boilerplate: History’s Mechanical Marvel is a graphic novel-picture book hybrid that tells the story of the world’s first robot and its adventures during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including a journey to the South Pole and a career in the silent movie business. The story ends when Boilerplate disappears on the battlefields of World War I.
Guinan tried to attract interest in a graphic novel featuring the character 11 years ago, when he posted the concept on a website. Eventually, people began to believe that the history of the robot was true. The graphic novel was released last year by Abrams Image, telling the story by means of inserting the character into pictures drawn in the style of the age.
Abrams will produce the project under his production company, Bad Robot.
