Nucleus Films have announced the release of Video Nasties: The Definitive Guide, a collection of trailers of all 72 films that were initially banned in the UK during the 1980s. Each title comes with a specially-filmed intro.
Outlawed by the Director of Public Prosecutions, and spurred on by clean-up campaigner Mary Whitehouse, the films featured in the collection were subject to scrutiny by juries and officials for their power to deprave and corrupt their audience. Many of the works vanished from the streets and those caught supplying or owning a copy were (and in some cases still are) susceptible to penalties.
Now, for the first time ever, trailers of all the movies from the Video Nasty era are available on DVD. Disc One presents the 39 titles that were successfully prosecuted in UK courts, including Ruggero Deodato's Cannibal Holocaust, Nightmares in a Damaged Brain and Zombie Flesh-Eaters.
Disc Two contains intros and trailers of the 33 titles that were initially banned, but then subsequently acquitted, such as Death Trap, The Evil Dead and The Toolbox Murders.
Disc Three contains Video Nasties: Moral Panic, Censorship and Videotape, a documentary with interviews from filmmakers and Whitehouse herself. Directed by Jake West (Doghouse), the documentary will also be screened at Film4 FrightFest on August 30, followed by a panel discussion.
Video Nasties: The Definitive Guide is released on Region 2 DVD on October 11. For more information of FrightFest, visit http://www.frightfest.co.uk
