Audiences hoping to replicate the Avatar cinema experience at home with the release of the Blu-ray and DVD later this year will have to cope without the 3D element, according to Fox parent company News Corporation.

In a conference call on February 2nd, chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch explained that the Blu-ray and DVD would come out before the end of the company's fiscal year on June 30th but that "the technology isn't developed enough yet". According to his deputy chairman Chase Carey a 3D release may be possible "down the road."

Murdoch did confirm that Fox would be "pushing" for an Avatar sequel, and are in early talks with James Cameron about the project, although he warned people not to "hold your breath for another one".
