Not content with overseeing the adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson is considering working on a version of Philip Reeve's fantasy quartet Mortal Engines.
According to New Zealand's The Dominion Post, Weta Workshop are working on designs for series, also known as the Hungry City Chronicles. The books are set in a post-apocalyptic steampunk world, ravaged by earthquakes. Entire cities have been converted into mobile vehicles known as Traction Cities, with a rigorously enforced class system, which need to consume each other to survive.
The paper notes that Jackson's spokesman did not deny he was working on the project, but said that "any comment should come from Peter." Scholastic Media Foundation's Deborah Forte had previously expressed an interest in adapting the books, but it is not clear if the projects are related.
