So cast your eye over the results below and see if you agree with fellow readers…

BEST SCI-FI FILM

WINNER: Star Trek
RUNNER UP: District 9

JJ Abrams managed to pull off the impossible and appeal to Trekkers and newcomers alike with his funny and sexy Trek reboot. Like you, we can’t wait for the next instalment…

BEST FANTASY FILM

WINNER: The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
RUNNER UP: Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince

When it comes to clever, original fantasy, you can always rely on Terry Gilliam. With gems such as Brazil and Time Bandits already under his belt, the high amount of votes for his latest opus suggests he’s scored another much-loved classic…

BEST HORROR FILM

WINNER: Drag Me to Hell
RUNNER UP: Let the Right One In

Scary, blackly comic and bursting with energy, Sam Raimi’s Drag Me to Hell proved a huge hit with critics, viewers and voters. Altogether now: “Here kitty kitty…”

BEST ANIMATED FILM

WINNER: Up
RUNNER UP: Coraline

Pixar’s ability to create masterpiece after masterpiece is enough to make other animation studios growl with jealousy. 2009 saw them produce arguably their best effort yet. By turns sad, heartwarming and hilarious, the convention-defying Up is impossible to resist.

BEST NOVEL

WINNER: Unseen Academicals by Terry Pratchett
RUNNER UP: Under the Dome by Stephen King

Unseen Academicals is Terry Pratchett’s 37th Discworld novel, but judging by its success in the Best Novel category, it’s clear that the series is far from running on empty. A devilishly inventive riot, this comic fantasy is impossible to resist.

BEST TV SHOW

WINNER: Supernatural
RUNNER UP: Torchwood

Five seasons in and Supernatural is delivering some of its best episodes yet. Ghosts & demons, the imminent apocalypse, Paris Hilton… There’s something for everyone. The terrific third series of Torchwood came a close second.

BEST COMIC

WINNER: Batman and Robin (ongoing)
RUNNER UP: The League of Extraordinary Gentleman: Century 1910 (Part one)

Grant Morrison’s hugely enjoyable take on the superhero duo is both offbeat and comprehensive, and the ongoing comic series has so far boasted artists including Frank Quietley and Philip Tan.

BEST SPECIAL EFFECTS

WINNER: Star Trek
RUNNER UP: Avatar

2009 wasn’t short of movies that pushed the boundaries of special effects both CG and practical. Star Trek saw off stiff competition and bagged the most votes, thanks to sterling work from ILM, Digital Domain and other VFX companies.

BEST ACTOR (TV OR FILM)

WINNER: David Tennant (Doctor Who)
RUNNER UP: Chris Pine (Star Trek)

Tennant’s Doctor only appeared in three Doctor Who specials in 2009 (four if you include The End of Time: Part Two on New Year’s Day), but the fact that these were the last opportunities to see this much-loved incarnation of the Doctor ensured Tennant took the most votes.

BEST ACTRESS (TV OR FILM)

WINNER: Zoe Saldana (Star Trek)
RUNNER UP: Amanda Tapping (Sanctuary)

Zoe Saldana has been appearing in TV shows and movies for 10 years now, but it was the actress’s smart, sexy take on Uhura in Star Trek that turned her into a fully fledged star. She followed it with another sterling performance as the blue-skinned Neytiri in Avatar in December.

BEST DIRECTOR (TV OR FILM)

WINNER: Neill Blomkamp (District 9)
RUNNER UP: JJ Abrams (Star Trek)

South African director Neill Blomkampp delivered an instant classic with his debut feature film. Blomkamp married an intelligent script (which he also co-wrote) to thunderous action sequences and edgy, documentary-style visuals to create a startling vision of alien apartheid.
